What is an IBCLC?

Expat midwife Geneva

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are highly experienced, trained and qualified to help mothers and babies to breastfeed.

They are knowledgeable in all areas of lactation and can help with both basic and complex breastfeeding challenges.

IBCLCs are experts and hold the internationally recognised breastfeeding credential.

IBCLCs are regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and are required to recertify every 5 years with approximately 15 hours of continuing education annually, or by exam.

IBCLCs work within a code of professional conduct and are subject to disciplinary procedure.

Be aware that anyone who is giving advice on breastfeeding can call themselves a 'lactation consultant', and not have any qualification. I have met many people throughout my carrier, who call themselves a 'Lactation Consultant", who have no medical background or accreditation, giving very inaccurate and even dangerous advice to their clients.

When looking for a lactation consultant always make sure that they are IBCLC and their license is still valid.

Always check their name on the Internation Board Certified Lactation Consultant register. (Click on the logo)
